I adore vintage advertisement and this one from the 1890’s, yes, over 100 years old, is no exception. This ad is suggesting that the man of the house should buy his wife their product and that she will be delighted to receive this. It’s the Housekeeper’s Scrapbook…it’s indexed, for recipes and household hints, holding 584 foot long columns from newspapers and magazines. I envision this gift being received…she’s hoping it’s a new dress or an interesting book or some fancy bonbons but what does she find in the box, more stuff to do. UGH! When the Man of the House is next seen at his local general store, the proprietor asks how the gift went over. Well…he tells a tale of initial excitement, followed by a disappointed head drop. When asked if she’s delighted she replies…”No, you might be mistaken” and dinner was NOT served that night! “Make your own damn dinner”
“Make your own damn dinner” is done on a 3” square canvas with a hook for hanging, no framing required. Actual pieces of magazines, books and other ephemera are used to make this one-of-a-kind piece (no scanning or reproductions used).
